The Competing Values Framework

Through the Ebony Innovates Lens

I use the Competing Values Framework through the Ebony Innovates Four-Color Lens™ to decode the competing values driving people, organizations and systems.

The behavior is visible. The value driving it is not.

Different scale. Same fundamental question: What values are driving the system, and what happens when those values collide?

Yellow sees the people.

Green sees what's possible.

Red sees what must be controlled.

Blue sees what can be won.

The question isn't which color is right. The question is what happens when they collide.

The Competing Values Framework emerged from the work of Robert Quinn, John Rohrbaugh and their collaborators, and was subsequently developed and applied in innovation practice by scholars and practitioners including Jeff DeGraff. Ebony Noir was trained in Jeff DeGraff's innovation methodology and the Competing Values Framework through Georgia State University's Certified Professional Innovator program. Her contribution is in how she translates competing values into a four-color visual language: the Ebony Innovates Four-Color Lens™, applied beyond traditional organizational analysis to examine departments, organizations, industries, relationships, institutions, countries and larger systems.
